For my week 7 Connect assignment, Practice Session: Adjectives, Adverbs, Modifiers, and Verb Tense and Voice Shifts, my most challenging concept was “identify[ing] sentences that correctly use present, past, and future progressive tenses” and “distinguish[ing] between the present perfect and past perfect tenses,” while concepts that I understood better are “identify[ing] the past tense form of verbs.” I got more answers correct in the less problem areas with a 50% accuracy rate, whereas the more problem areas had an accuracy rate of 33-40%. I think that my problem areas were issues of identifying certain concepts rather than being able to apply them, so I do not think that they are as important to improve on. However, if I were to improve on them in the future, I could practice these concepts more on Connect during the upcoming summer.

Week 7 Challenging Concepts During Practice
For my week 8 connect assignment, Using Effective Word Choice and Eliminating Wordiness, my most challenging concepts were “identifying constructions such as ‘there is/are,’ ‘there was/were,’ and ‘it was’ in a sentence “ and revising the sentence to get rid of these constructions, and using varied sentences. I was better at finding unnecessary nouns and changing the beginning of a sentence. I made the most progress in the areas that I was better at because I got 50% of those questions correct, while I got 0-13% of the more problem areas correct. I would like to improve on reducing unnecessary words by better identifying construction starting with it or there, which I can practice with Connect practice problems during the upcoming summer to improve on my writing. Additionally, reading more quality writing will help me reduce these phrases because then you see more examples of how writing can be.

Ideal Summer Reading
The Power of Process assignment, “Skim Reading Practice: To Give is Better than to Receive,” helped strengthen my skimming skills which will help in the next writing and research course, Writing Sixty. Although I already knew that when one skims, they should first read on the author and the titles and headings of the article, I did not know that you could also skim the main parts of the essay like methodology or results. In general, I spend a lot of time trying to read the integral part of any paper, but I have started to notice, for example, in my philosophy paper, if I skim the whole paper, I can still come back to skim the integral part again with a fresh perspective if I still do not understand it.
