Reflection on Writing Forty Five (week 10)

The IP Multimodal Memoir - Audience Analysis during week 7 resulted in transformative learning. Previously, I knew that one should think about what message they want to show their audience from the GA essay, but I had not considered that publishers also change their memoirs to cater to the publication audience better. I think that this applies to the world outside the Writing Forty Five discourse community because it helps me be a little better of a critical thinker. For example, when I read something, I have to think about what the author is changing their message and rhetorical purpose towards the publication. This new learning may cause me to analyze more.

Specifically, I saw that the audience of my memoir was a liberal group who wanted to diversify their viewpoints on cultural issues. Thus, I focused my memoir more on identity and stereotyping people rather than focus more on a message about family.

The IP Writing Practice: Developing Your Characters week nine assignment resulted in transformative learning as well. I saw that you can describe characters not just with their physical attributes, but you can describe their physical attributes in ways that portray your tone towards the character, or you can describe a character’s actions to show their personality. This helped me see writing as a more creative process, for example, writing can be more artistic by using unique ways to describe people and tone.

A specific example of this learning is when I described my mom as an environmental activist through her actions instead of stating it. Using these techniques may cause me to interpret future writing as more creative and artistic.

Creativity in Description

Overall, I think that I can work on procrastinating assignments. I often submit assignments late, for example, I procrastinated on changing my blog background from black to white so that the text was readable, until it was too late to change it. Thus, I think that I need a certain level of business to do my assignments at a more appropriate pace, otherwise I do not feel pressure to do them and it to the last minute. Thus, I am taking harder courses next quarter, and I may join another club sport as well.

Another issue that I had in the class was doing work at a slower pace than I should have. I think that to counteract this in the future, I can try to designate a certain amount of time per assignment, and as stated above, participate in more activities so that I am forced to finish the assignment in less time.
