Hello. I am Deeti, a first year undergraduate at UCI majoring in Environmental Science and Policy. I was brought up in New Jersey, and then moved to Irvine, California in 6th grade, where I now enjoy bonfires and trails. I would like to do my part in making the world a better place, try new activities, and meet new people. To learn more about me, you can visit this slideshow

In high school, one of the courses I took was AP Literature and Composition. I used to think that figurative language was only useful in adding “fluff” to your writing, but I learned that figurative language devices can shape how an author portrays a subject. Additionally, I saw that there were many different genres of writing, not all the stereotypical normal. For example, I read absurdism, and saw writing as more of an art than a textbook.

In this course, I found that I have strong argumentative essay skills, however, I lack in diction and am average in writing narratives. I am detail-oriented, so I understand nuance in complex texts, however, it is sometimes difficult to summarize and understand text because I tend to focus on the details . For example, in AP U.S. History, we were assigned about 5-10 pages of textbook reading everyday, but I took a few hours to complete the readings, and my notes were long. After a while, I stopped reading the textbook and relied more on the lectures. To look at some positive, in the same class, when we read an chapter on the industrial revolution, I paid attention to the nuances and understood the author’s argument. Others did not understand why it seemed like the author switched sides at the end, when he really did not. With this being said, I occasionally read news articles from the OC Register, LA Times, etc. and sift through social media like Instagram, Slack, etc. in order to communicate with others and learn about club events.

In terms of grammar, my language and grammar diagnostic score was a 66%. I sometimes did not understand what the question was asking as I did not know what a fused sentence or dangling modifier was. I thought that I knew the correct answers for most of the questions, but sometimes I made a silly mistake or had a misunderstanding for when to actually place commas.

In regards to WR45, the syllabus outlines major projects for students, the purpose of the course, and explains student conduct expectations. In addition, it links to the grading contract of the course, which explains that the course is there to to allow students to learn and take creative risks, thus, completing the assignments well enough will give students a safety net grade. This allows students to take risks that help us learn more. Course objectives described include using different modes of communication to serve the project’s purpose and apply critical thinking in order to have a fruitful understanding of the topic. In addition, students will learn how to identify different genres and rhetorical devices, and assess how this enhances purpose.
